Description

Yamaha YM-2400R Marimba – 4.3 Octaves with Honduran Rosewood Tone Bars

The Yamaha YM-2400R is a serious step up for players who want the sound and feel of real rosewood bars, but still need a practical 4.3 octave marimba that works well in schools, colleges, rehearsal rooms and solo practice spaces.

It shares the same useful 4.3 octave range as the YM-2400 Acoustalon model, but swaps the artificial wood bars for carefully selected Honduran rosewood. That gives the instrument a warmer, more complex and more traditional marimba tone, with the response and projection needed for more developed playing.

This is a strong choice for advanced students, percussion teachers, music departments and players working on graded repertoire, solo pieces and small ensemble music.

What Does It Actually Sound Like?

The Honduran rosewood bars are the main reason to choose this model.

Compared with synthetic or padauk bars, rosewood gives a more natural, rounded and resonant tone. The sound has more depth, more warmth and a more expressive response under the mallets, which makes a real difference once players start working on more musical phrasing, dynamics and solo repertoire.

The graduated bars help the lower notes speak with more body, while the upper register stays clear and focused. Yamaha’s tuning method also helps the instrument produce a balanced, accurate tone across the full A–c4 range.

If the YM-2400 Acoustalon is the practical school workhorse, the YM-2400R is the more musical rosewood version for players who want extra warmth and character.

Why Choose the Yamaha YM-2400R?

The YM-2400R is a good choice when tone matters, but you still need a marimba that is manageable in a real teaching or rehearsal environment.

The 4.3 octave range covers a wide amount of graded marimba repertoire and gives players more room than a 3.5 octave student model. It is also a practical size for schools and colleges that do not have the space or budget for a full 5 octave concert marimba.

The frame is height adjustable from 89cm to 97cm, with pneumatic struts that make adjustment easier for one person. The hinged resonators and rails, two-piece crossbar and large 4" casters all make movement and breakdown more manageable than you might expect from an instrument of this size.

Who Is It For?

The Yamaha YM-2400R is ideal for players who are ready for a proper rosewood marimba but do not necessarily need a full 5 octave concert instrument.

It is well suited to advanced students, schools, colleges, music services and percussion teachers. The 4.3 octave range gives access to a lot of graded and intermediate-to-advanced repertoire, while the rosewood bars give a more expressive tone than padauk or synthetic alternatives.

It is also a good choice for smaller teaching spaces where a larger concert marimba would be difficult to fit or move.

Not Sure If This Is the Right Marimba?

If you are choosing between the Yamaha YM-2400 and YM-2400R, the biggest difference is the bar material.

The YM-2400 uses Acoustalon bars, which are very durable and resistant to temperature and humidity changes. That makes it especially practical for heavy school use.

The YM-2400R uses Honduran rosewood bars, which give a warmer, richer and more traditional marimba sound. It is the better choice when tone and musical expression are the priority.
