Yamaha YM-2400 Acoustalon Marimba – 4.3 Octaves
The Yamaha YM-2400 is a 4.3 octave marimba designed for schools, colleges, percussion departments and players who need a reliable full-size practice and ensemble instrument without the upkeep concerns of natural wood bars.
Instead of rosewood or padauk, the YM-2400 uses Yamaha’s Acoustalon tone bars. These are fibre-reinforced artificial wood bars designed to give a warm, natural marimba sound while being far more resistant to changes in temperature, humidity and daily handling. That makes this model especially useful in education settings where the instrument may be moved, shared and played heavily throughout the week.
It gives students and developing players a proper 4.3 octave marimba range, a height-adjustable frame, large casters and a practical breakdown design, all in a format that is much easier to maintain than a traditional rosewood concert marimba.
What Does It Actually Sound Like?
The YM-2400 is designed to sound close to a natural wooden marimba, but with the durability benefits of Acoustalon.
The tone is warm, clear and resonant, with enough body in the lower register and a clean, focused response in the upper notes. It will not have exactly the same character as a high-end rosewood concert marimba, but for schools, colleges, rehearsals and regular student use, it gives a very musical sound without being as delicate or climate-sensitive.
Yamaha’s Sonic Tone Hole design helps the Acoustalon bars produce a more open, resonant tone, while the graduated bar sizes improve projection across the full range.
Why Choose the Yamaha YM-2400?
The big reason to choose the YM-2400 is reliability.
Natural wood bars can sound beautiful, but they can also be more vulnerable to humidity, temperature changes, knocks and heavy day-to-day use. Acoustalon is much more stable, which makes this marimba a very sensible choice for schools, rehearsal rooms and shared percussion spaces.
The 4.3 octave A–c4 range is also a major step up from smaller student marimbas. It gives players room to work on more advanced repertoire, ensemble parts and graded percussion material, while still keeping the instrument compact enough for teaching rooms and rehearsal spaces.
The height-adjustable frame uses pneumatic struts, making it easier for one person to adjust the playing height. Hinged resonators and rails, plus a two-piece crossbar, also make the instrument easier to break down when it needs to be moved or stored.

Who Is It For?
The Yamaha YM-2400 is ideal for schools, colleges, music services, percussion teachers and rehearsal spaces that need a proper 4.3 octave marimba that can cope with regular use.
It is a particularly good choice where the instrument will be used by lots of different players. The Acoustalon bars make it more practical for shared spaces than a more delicate rosewood model, while the adjustable frame helps suit players of different heights.
It is also a strong option for developing percussionists who need more range than a 3.5 octave model, but who do not necessarily need a professional rosewood concert marimba.
Not Sure If This Is the Right Marimba?
If you are choosing between the Yamaha YM-1430 and YM-2400, both give you a 4.3 octave range, but the main difference is the bar material.
The YM-1430 uses padauk bars, giving a natural wooden tone at a more affordable level. The YM-2400 uses Acoustalon bars, which are more resistant to temperature, humidity and heavy handling. For schools and busy teaching environments, the YM-2400 is often the more practical long-term choice.
