Description

Yamaha YCH6118 Chimes – 1.5 Octaves with 31.8mm Brass Tubes

The Yamaha YCH6118 is a 1.5 octave chime set designed for schools, colleges, universities, orchestras, theatres, music services and percussion departments that need proper orchestral chimes in a slightly smaller and more manageable format.

It has a C52–F69 range, 31.8mm brass tubes, clear lacquer coating and Yamaha’s improved head cap and damper design. Compared with the larger YCH7118, the YCH6118 uses smaller diameter tubes and has a playing position around 10cm lower, making it especially useful for younger players or players of smaller stature.

This is a serious chime instrument, but with a more accessible playing height and compact feel than Yamaha’s larger professional model.

What Does It Actually Sound Like?

The YCH6118 has a clear, rich and resonant chime sound with long sustain and strong pitch definition.

The 31.8mm brass tubes give a bright, musical tone with plenty of carrying power, while the clear lacquer finish helps protect the tubes without taking away the classic chime character. The sound is full enough for orchestral and theatre use, but the smaller tube diameter gives it a slightly more controlled and manageable response than larger chime sets.

The improved head cap design helps produce a richer fundamental tone and a wider sweet spot, making it easier for players to get a good sound consistently.

Why Choose the Yamaha YCH6118?

The YCH6118 is a good choice when you need proper Yamaha chimes, but want a model that is easier for a wider range of players to use.

The lower playing position makes it more comfortable for younger players and smaller adults, which is a real advantage in schools, colleges and music service use. The C52–F69 range covers the standard 1.5 octave chime setup used in a lot of orchestral, wind band, theatre and percussion ensemble writing.

Yamaha has also improved the damper system. The damper movement is designed to work with the front-to-back motion of the tubes when struck, making it easier to stop the long sustain at the right musical moment.

Who Is It For?

The Yamaha YCH6118 is ideal for schools, colleges, universities, orchestras, theatres, brass bands, wind bands and percussion departments that need a proper set of chimes.

It is especially useful in education settings because the playing position is lower than the larger YCH7118, making it more comfortable for younger players and smaller adults.

For a music department, it gives students access to real orchestral chimes without jumping straight to the largest professional model.

Not Sure If This Is the Right Chime Set?

If you are comparing the Yamaha YCH6118 and YCH7118, the main differences are tube size, playing height and overall scale.

The YCH6118 uses smaller 31.8mm tubes and has a lower playing position, making it a good choice for schools, colleges and players who need a slightly more manageable chime setup.

The YCH7118 is the larger professional model with bigger 38.1mm tubes and a taller frame, giving a larger orchestral sound and presence.

If you are buying for a school, music service, orchestra or percussion department and are not sure which Yamaha chime set is best, get in touch and we can help you choose the right setup.
