Yamaha TP-7300R Series Symphonic Timpani
The TP-7300R sits at the top of Yamaha's timpani range — a hammered copper instrument designed specifically to satisfy advanced players and professional orchestral percussionists. If you're after the genuine concert hall sound and feel, this is the series built to deliver it.
The defining feature is the hammered copper bowl. Hammering the copper increases the strength of the bowl material, which gives the instrument a noticeably crisper attack and a more powerful overall sound compared to a smooth or seamless bowl. Yamaha uses specially designed hammering machines that faithfully simulate the traditional hand-hammering process while removing the inconsistencies that come with purely manual work. The intent wasn't just efficiency — it was recreating the technique of master craftsmen, and the result is a bowl that carries genuine hand-made warmth in its tone.
Bowl Design
Every detail of the bowl has been examined and refined — bowl size, the bearing edge shape where the head contacts the bowl, and the diameter of the aperture in the base. All of it is engineered to bring out the deepest, richest tone the copper material is capable of, while keeping the instrument genuinely playable across its full range, even at the demanding level this series is built for.
Pedal Adjustment Clutch (PAC) System
This is one of the standout features that separates the TP-7300R from Yamaha's other timpani ranges. The PAC system lets you adjust pedal resistance while maintaining perfect pedal balance, controlled via a large, easy-to-use knob. For professional players who have specific preferences about pedal feel and response, this level of fine control is genuinely valuable — you're not stuck with a fixed resistance that may or may not suit your technique.
Pedal Balance Spring System
Pedal spring and head tension work together so your set pitch holds steady even with your foot off the pedal entirely. Pitch changes across the full range are smooth and controlled, and each instrument achieves a wide pitch range of approximately a minor sixth per inch of bowl diameter — giving you real flexibility within a single instrument.
Frame and Floating Mount
The frame plays a direct role in the instrument's sound, not just its structure — built for strength and operability while keeping weight tuned for optimum acoustic response. The bowl sits in a Floating Mount suspension ring, isolated from contact with any other part of the instrument. That isolation prevents the frame from distorting the bowl and allows the head to oscillate freely, which is central to the instrument's tone, resonance and pitch clarity.
Mobility and Setup
Large main castors are supplemented by a third castor positioned below the pedal, letting the instrument glide smoothly across any stage or rehearsal space. All castors adjust over a 25mm height range using the supplied tuning key or an Allen wrench, allowing precise control over both instrument height and head angle — easily managed by one person, whether you're set up for standing or seated playing.
A one-touch lock mechanism on the main castors makes setup fast and secure, with an auxiliary brake on the pedal castor for an additional, more positive lock when you need the instrument completely stationary.
Further Details
Large pedals give you easier, more confident operation. The tuning indicator relocates to either side of the instrument for German or American/international setups, and a tuning key/wrench holder is built into the frame opposite the tuning gauge. Yamaha Remo Renaissance heads with aluminium insert rings come fitted as standard, offering stable pitch and genuinely expressive playing feel.
