Timpani have a reputation for being difficult to move, difficult to set up, and difficult to keep in tune — which makes a genuinely portable, professional-sounding option like the TP-3300 Series particularly valuable. It delivers full professional, top-class sound using aluminium bowls shaped the same way as Yamaha's flagship models, paired with retractable legs and pedals that make the whole instrument easy to transport, store and set up.

This isn't a scaled-down compromise built purely for portability. Yamaha's research into bowl edge angle and the dimensions of the openings in the base of the bowl has gone directly into the TP-3300 design, with the specific aim of bringing out the best characteristics of the aluminium material being used.

Built on Flagship Design

The aluminium bowls use the same shape as Yamaha's top-line TP-7300, TP-6300 and TP-4300 Series timpani. The bowls have also been carefully dimensioned so that even beginner players can access the full sonic potential of the instrument with relative ease — useful for school and youth ensemble settings where players may still be developing their technique.

Yamaha Remo Renaissance heads with aluminium insert rings are fitted, offering stable pitch, strong expressive range and excellent durability. The hoops are the same as those used on Yamaha's top-line models, providing high rigidity and improved integration between head and bowl — both contributing directly to the instrument's tonal clarity and sustain.

Designed for Easy, Stress-Free Operation

A lot of thought has gone into the practical side of using these timpani day to day. New, large 75mm castors make moving the instrument around considerably easier, with castor locks preventing unwanted movement while the pedal is in use.

The pedal itself uses an optimised spring design for smooth, stable operation at any pitch, and the legs adjust easily thanks to a square cross-section leg pipe that prevents rotation during height adjustment — keeping the setup process straightforward rather than fiddly. Head height adjusts across a 79–82cm range to suit different players comfortably.

The tuning indicator — the same one used on Yamaha's top-line models — is built from materials chosen specifically to keep operation smooth and silent, and can be relocated to either side of the instrument depending on whether you're working in a German or international/American setup.

Portability

The combination of lightweight aluminium bowls and retractable legs and pedals makes these timpani genuinely portable compared to traditional copper-bowl instruments. When compacted for transport, the smaller sizes in the series fold down to a manageable footprint, making them realistic to move between rehearsal spaces, schools, and performance venues without specialist transport.

Available Sizes

The TP-3300 Series is available in 23", 26", 29" and 32" sizes, sold individually or as a complete set of four for a full timpani section. Smaller sizes give you higher pitch ranges, while the larger 29" and 32" instruments cover the lower end. The 26", 29" and 32" bowls are shallower than the previous generation of this series, by 40mm, 25mm and 45mm respectively — a refinement that contributes to the improved tonal characteristics of the current range.
