At the core of the shell is a ply of wenge — a very hard, heavy hardwood native to Africa — sandwiched between layers of maple, which is known for its clear, articulate tone. Combining the two gives you a drum that stays rich and clear across the full dynamic range, from the quietest ghost notes up to full-force hits, rather than losing definition or turning muddy as you play harder.

Built for Tonal Performance, Not Just Looks

A lot of small engineering decisions go into making this tom sound the way it does. The hook lugs have a deliberately small footprint, which keeps more of the shell free to vibrate and maximises tone output, while still giving you quick head changes and precise, high-tension tuning when needed.

The YESS III tom mount is a meaningful step up from Yamaha's earlier YESS II system, reducing acoustic dampening even further so the shell can vibrate more freely — bringing out more natural sustain and volume than older mounting designs typically allow. The low-mass tom holder base contributes to the same goal, keeping its footprint and weight low so the shell isn't being held back by the hardware attached to it.
