Description

Vintage V4SSB ReIssued Series Bass – Sunset Sunburst

Vintage's ReIssued Series exists to answer a simple question: what if you could get a properly designed, properly specified bass guitar without paying the premium that usually comes with that level of thought and execution? The V4SSB is a strong answer to that question — designed by Trev Wilkinson and the UK Vintage design team, built around components and construction choices that reflect genuine bass playing experience rather than cost-cutting decisions dressed up as features.

The Sunset Sunburst finish is one of those colourways that looks exactly right on a classic bass body shape — warm, familiar, and visually appealing without being flashy. It's the kind of guitar that looks as at home on a stage as it does hanging on a wall.

The Low End

The pickup is a split coil design using Alnico V magnets — chosen specifically for their ability to preserve sub frequencies, giving the V4SSB a rock-solid, full low-end foundation. This is the character that sits at the heart of classic bass tone: warm, defined, and present without being boomy or uncontrolled. Whether you're playing with a pick for a more aggressive, punchy attack or fingerstyle for a rounder, smoother sound, the Alnico V magnets give the pickup a tonal quality that works across styles.

Controls are straightforward — independent master volume and tone — which keeps the signal path clean and the playing experience intuitive.

The Neck and Body

The neck is hard maple, bolt-on, with Vintage's classic soft C profile. That shape is no accident — it's a familiar, comfortable profile that suits a wide range of hand sizes and playing techniques, and one that players often cite as a reason they reach for a particular bass without being able to immediately say why. Paired with a rosewood fingerboard at a traditional 12" radius, the whole thing feels predictable and comfortable from the first time you pick it up.

20 medium jumbo frets give you adequate range across the neck with a comfortable, accurate feel, and the pearloid dot inlays keep the fingerboard looking clean and classic.

The body is eastern poplar — a tonewood chosen for its resonance, tonal character and what Vintage describe as "correct weight" comfort. It's not a heavy bass, and that matters more than people sometimes acknowledge, especially across a full evening of playing.

The Nufour brass saddle bridge improves intonation across the full length of the fretboard, and Wilkinson WJBL200 machine heads provide simple, stable, reliable tuning that doesn't require constant attention.

Who Is It For?

The tagline on the V4 is "whether you're searching for your first bass or your last" — and that's not just marketing copy. This is a genuinely well-specified instrument that beginners will find easy and encouraging to play, and that more experienced players will respect for its tonal character and build quality. It's a strong first bass, a reliable gigging instrument, and a credible backup for players who already have something more expensive.
