Shure BETA 52A Supercardioid Kick Drum Microphone

The Shure BETA 52A is one of the classic choices for miking kick drums, bass amps and other low-frequency instruments.
It is built for big sound pressure levels, tight low-end punch and a focused pickup pattern that helps keep the rest of the stage out of the mic. If you need a kick drum mic that can handle live gigs, studio sessions, rehearsal rooms and regular stage use, this is exactly the sort of microphone people reach for again and again.
It is not a general vocal mic or an all-purpose instrument mic. The BETA 52A is very much designed for bass-heavy sources, and that is where it makes the most sense.
What Does It Actually Sound Like?
The BETA 52A has a big, punchy low-end sound with a tailored response made specifically for kick drums and bass instruments.
The frequency response runs from 20Hz to 10kHz, with a presence boost around 4kHz. In normal terms, that means it gives you the weight of the drum or bass cab, but still helps the attack cut through the mix. On kick drum, you get the thump and body, but also enough beater definition so it does not disappear once the rest of the band starts playing.
On bass guitar cabinets, it captures plenty of low-end while keeping the sound focused and usable. It is also a good option for acoustic bass and other low-frequency sources where you need control, punch and isolation.
Why Use a Supercardioid Kick Drum Mic?
Kick drums live in a noisy part of the stage. Cymbals, snare, monitors, guitar amps and bass amps are all nearby, so isolation matters.
The BETA 52A uses a supercardioid pickup pattern, which helps reject sound from the sides and reduces unwanted spill. That makes it easier to get a cleaner kick drum sound, especially on stage or in a busy recording setup.
It also helps with gain before feedback, which is important when you are putting kick drum through a PA system.
Built for Real Stage Use
This is a tough microphone.
The hardened steel grille is designed to cope with regular handling, and the built-in pneumatic shock mount helps reduce mechanical noise and vibration. The integrated locking stand adapter is also very useful, especially when positioning the mic inside or just outside a bass drum.
The XLR connector is built into the stand adapter, so the setup stays tidy and practical. That is a small design detail, but it makes a big difference when you are working around drum hardware, short mic stands and tight stage space.
Who Is It For?
The BETA 52A is ideal for drummers, live sound engineers, studios, rehearsal rooms, venues, schools, churches and hire companies that need a dependable low-frequency microphone.
It is especially useful if you are building a drum mic setup and need a proper kick drum mic rather than trying to make a vocal mic do the job. It also pairs well with snare and tom mics as part of a larger drum microphone setup.
If you are only recording quiet acoustic instruments, this is probably not the mic you need. But for kick drum, bass cabinet and loud low-frequency sources, it is a very strong choice.

Not Sure If This Is the Right Microphone?
The Shure BETA 52A is the right sort of mic if you need a focused, punchy sound from a kick drum, bass cab or similar low-frequency source.
If you want a flatter, more natural instrument mic for acoustic guitar, strings or brass, this is probably too specialised. If you want a vocal mic, look at something like an SM58 or BETA 58A instead. If you want a kick drum mic that gives you weight, attack and good stage isolation, the BETA 52A is a very safe choice.
If you are building a full drum mic setup and are not sure what you need for kick, snare, toms and overheads, get in touch and we will help you put the right kit together.
