Description

If you've spent any time in a professional studio, you've almost certainly heard an 1176 doing its thing — on vocals, on bass, on room mics, on the mix bus. The UREI 1176LN, originally released in 1967, was the first solid-state compressor on the market and it has been a studio fixture ever since. The Klark Teknik 76-KT is a hardware recreation of the D and E revisions of that unit — the two most sought-after versions — at a price that puts genuine analogue 1176-style compression within reach of home studio owners and working engineers alike.

And it's not a budget approximation. The signal path is completely discrete, the components are hand-selected, and the input and output transformers are custom-engineered by MIDAS — one of the most respected names in professional audio, whose consoles have been used by some of the biggest touring acts in the world for decades. That's not a small detail: transformers have a significant influence on how a unit sounds, and having MIDAS-designed transformers in a unit at this price point is genuinely unusual.

How It Sounds

The 1176 character is all there — fast, punchy, and with a particular ability to add presence and control to a signal without making it sound squashed or lifeless. Several users who've reviewed the 76-KT have noted that it sounds better than their 1176 plugins, and that's not as surprising as it might seem. Analogue hardware and a discrete Class-A signal path behave differently to software emulations, particularly when you start pushing the unit harder.

Drive it gently and it thickens vocals and instruments with a subtle, controlled warmth. Push it harder and you start to get character — presence, colour, that forward quality that makes something sit right at the front of a mix.

Controls and Operation

The ratio buttons sit to the left of the VU meter — 4:1 for moderate compression, 8:1 for heavier compression, 12:1 for mild limiting, and 20:1 for hard limiting. The famous All-Button mode, accidentally discovered on the original 1176, is here too — press all four ratio buttons simultaneously for an aggressive, characterful compression effect that works particularly well on drums, bass, guitar and room mics.

Attack adjusts from 20 to 800 microseconds (faster when turned clockwise), release from 80 to 700 milliseconds. There's also a -20dB pad switch on the rear panel for hot input signals, and a front-mounted power switch — both practical additions over the original design.

The illuminated vintage-style VU meter handles gain reduction and output monitoring, with three selectable calibration points (+4, +6 or +8 dBm).

Built for Studio and Stage

The 76-KT is housed in a rugged steel 2U rackmount chassis, and the transformer-balanced inputs and outputs use Neutrik XLR connectors — so it's built to handle the rigours of live touring as well as permanent studio installation. The universal auto-ranging power supply works worldwide. Klark Teknik also backs it with a 10-year warranty programme.
