Gibraltar SC-GPHCUT Bass Drum Port Hole Cutter – 4" to 6" Adjustable
Safe and secure checkout
Cutting a port hole in a bass drum resonant head is one of those jobs that looks straightforward but goes wrong surprisingly easily. A blunt craft knife or a pair of scissors leaves a ragged, uneven edge that looks rough and can cause the head to tear further over time. The Gibraltar SC-GPHCUT takes the guesswork out of it entirely.
It's a purpose-built cutter with a blade and guide pin that keeps the cut controlled and circular as you work around the head. The result is a clean, professional-looking port hole every time — the kind you'd expect from a factory-ported head rather than a DIY job.
Why Port a Bass Drum Head?
There are a few good reasons to cut a port hole, and they're not mutually exclusive. The most common is microphone access — placing a mic inside the shell through a port hole gives you a much more controlled, direct sound than miking from the outside, and it's standard practice in live and studio situations. A port hole also allows air to escape freely when the beater strikes, which can reduce the pressure build-up that sometimes causes unwanted head movement and tone inconsistencies.
The size range of 4" to 6" covers the most commonly used port hole dimensions. Smaller holes give you slightly more resonance and a tighter sound; larger holes let more air out and give easier mic access.
Clean Results, Every Time
The blade and guide pin design means you're not freehanding the cut — the pin anchors the tool at the centre point of your chosen hole position, and the blade rotates around it at a fixed radius. Adjust the radius to your preferred size anywhere between 4" and 6", press the pin in, and rotate. Done cleanly in one pass.
If you're finishing the job properly, Gibraltar's snap-on port hole protectors fit the cut edge neatly and protect it from fraying or damage over time — worth picking up alongside this if you haven't already.

A Note Before You Cut
This tool is designed for use on drumheads only — standard plastic batter and resonant heads. Take your time, keep steady pressure on the guide pin, and rotate the cutter in one smooth pass for the cleanest result. If you're unsure about sizing, 4" is a good starting point for venting only; 5" to 6" is more practical if you're also feeding a microphone through the hole. If you have any questions about which size to go for, just drop us a message.
