Description

Blackstar ID 50 50W 1x12 Digital Modelling Guitar Amp Combo

The Blackstar ID 50 is a proper modern guitar amp for players who want plenty of sounds without needing a complicated setup.

It takes the idea of a classic guitar combo — plug in, turn a few knobs, get playing — and adds the flexibility you would expect from a good digital amp. You get six amp voices, built-in effects, power reduction, USB-C recording, CabRig speaker simulation, an OLED display and enough patch storage to cover home practice, recording, rehearsal and live use.

The important bit is that it still feels like an amp. You are not stuck scrolling through endless menus or relying on an app just to make a basic sound. The main controls are right there on the front panel, so you can dial in a clean, crunch or high-gain tone quickly and then go deeper when you want to.

What Does It Actually Sound Like?

The ID 50 covers a lot of ground. You get six amp voices: Clean Warm, Clean Bright, Crunch, Super Crunch, OD1 and OD2. That gives you everything from glassy clean tones and edge-of-breakup rhythm sounds through to heavier Blackstar-style gain.

The three power amp response settings — EL84, EL34 and 6L6 — are there to change the feel of the amp, not just the EQ. EL84 gives you a bit more chime and compression, EL34 leans into classic British rock territory, and 6L6 gives a firmer, punchier response that works well for cleaner American-style tones and tighter high gain.

Blackstar’s ISF control is also built in, letting you move the character of the amp between a more American-style response and a more British-style voice. It is one of those controls that is genuinely useful because it changes the personality of the amp without needing to rebuild your whole sound.

Built-In Effects Without the Faff

The ID 50 has over 35 built-in effects, covering pre-effects, modulation, delay and reverb. You can edit them directly from the amp, with the OLED screen showing you what you are changing as you go.

That makes it much more practical than older modelling amps where you had to remember which flashing light meant what. Here, you can actually see patch names, effect choices and parameters, which is a big help when you are building sounds or moving between presets.

For most players, this means you can leave a pedalboard at home for practice, rehearsals or smaller gigs. You still have an effects loop if you want to add your own pedals, but you are not dependent on them to get usable sounds.

Power for Practice, Rehearsal and Gigs

At full power, the ID 50 gives you 50 watts through a 12" Blackstar Anthem 50 speaker, so it has enough output for rehearsals and many live situations.

The useful bit is the power reduction. You can switch between 50W, 10W and 1W, so you can still use the amp at home without it being completely over the top. The 1W mode is especially handy for quieter practice, while 10W gives you a sensible middle ground for home, teaching rooms or lower-volume rehearsals.

Recording and Connectivity

The ID 50 is not just for the room you are standing in. USB-C connectivity means you can use it for recording, while Blackstar’s CabRig speaker simulation gives you more realistic direct tones for headphones, recording and sending a cab-style output from the amp.

There is also a 3.5mm line input for playing along with tracks, plus a headphone output for quieter practice. If you want hands-free control, the amp is compatible with Blackstar FS-12 and FS-18 footcontrollers, available separately.

One thing to be aware of: the ID 50 does not have the balanced XLR output or MIDI connectivity found on the ID 100. If those are essential for your setup, the larger model is the one to look at.

Who Is This Amp For?

This is a great choice for players who want one amp that can cover a lot of jobs.

It works well as a serious home practice amp, a recording tool, a rehearsal amp and a compact gigging combo. It is especially useful if you play different styles and need clean, crunch, rock and high-gain sounds in one box.

It would suit beginners who want an amp they will not outgrow straight away, intermediate players who need more flexibility, and gigging players who want something lighter and easier than carrying a valve amp and pedalboard everywhere.

If you only ever use one clean tone or one overdrive sound, this might be more amp than you need. But if you like having lots of usable tones ready to go, the ID 50 makes a lot of sense.

Not Sure If This Is the Right Amp?

The ID 50 is the right choice if you want a flexible 50W modelling combo that can handle home practice, recording, rehearsal and live work without needing lots of extra gear.

If you need more stage volume, balanced XLR output or MIDI connectivity, look at the ID 100 instead. If you only need something very small for quiet home practice, one of the ID or FLY models may be a better fit.

If you are unsure which Blackstar amp suits your playing, get in touch and we will help you choose the right one.
