Looking to buy a second-hand drum kit or thinking of selling yours? At Ev-Entz Music, we specialise in buying and selling quality pre-owned drum kits, snare drums, cymbals, hardware, and accessories. Whether you're a new player on a budget or a seasoned drummer chasing that vintage sound, second-hand drums can offer outstanding value and character — if you know what to look for.
What to Look for When Buying a Used Drum Kit
Buying used gear doesn't have to be risky. Here are some key things to check when inspecting a second-hand drum kit:
- Shell Condition: Ensure the shells aren't cracked, warped, or out-of-round. Gently roll the shell on a flat surface to check its shape.
- Bearing Edges & Hoops: Damaged bearing edges can cause tuning issues. Look closely for dents or inconsistencies. Make sure hoops are round and undamaged.
- Rust or Corrosion: Check lugs, hoops, tension rods, and stands for rust. Even tiny rust spots can become a restoration hassle.
- Drum Heads: Worn heads aren’t a dealbreaker, but factor in the cost of replacements.
- Cymbals: Inspect for cracks, keyholing, and signs of stress. Tap them lightly and listen for clean sustain.
- Hardware Functionality: Make sure all stands, pedals, and thrones lock and move properly. This includes cymbal stands, hi-hat stands, snare drum stands, and drum hardware. One drummer’s regret? Buying a throne that didn’t lock — and replacing it sooner than expected.
