Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme
If your child receives music lessons through their school or local music service, you could qualify to buy a musical instrument VAT-free – that’s a 20% saving! The Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme (AIPS) makes it easier for families to support young musicians with the right equipment at the right price.
✅ What Is AIPS?
AIPS is a UK-wide scheme that allows pupils in state-funded education to purchase instruments without paying VAT, as long as the following conditions are met:
- 🎓 The child is in full-time education
- 🏫 Music tuition is provided through a state school or local authority music service
- 🎺 The instrument is used as part of their musical tuition
🛠️ How It Works
- 🎻 Choose an instrument – Pick something suitable for your child’s needs and ability.
- 📞 Contact your school or local authority – They’ll confirm if AIPS is available and guide you through the process.
- 💳 Pay the VAT-free price – You’ll pay the school the instrument’s price excluding VAT.
- 🧾 School places the order – The school orders the instrument and reclaims the VAT.
- 🎒 Collect from school – The instrument must be handed over on school premises.
📋 Who’s Eligible?
You may be able to use the scheme if:
- 🏫 Your child attends a state school or academy
- 🎶 They receive music tuition through a local authority music service
- 🎼 The instrument is appropriate for learning and will be used in lessons or ensembles
- 💼 The school or music service is VAT registered and agrees to facilitate the purchase
⚠️ Note: Not all schools or services are required to take part. Be sure to check with your local music service before placing an order.
